(PUPPET CONSTRUCTION WORKSHOP)
Join us and discover the transformative power of puppetry, where discarded objects find new life and connect us to our shared humanity
Abstract
This participatory workshop offers a hands-on introduction into puppet making techniques. The main focus of the workup is to introduce participants into the construction of theatrical objects using recyclable material rescued from the garbage as our departure point.
Duration 2 hours
This workshop is designed for anyone interested in exploring the art of puppet design and construction, from complete beginners to those with some experience. The participants are encourage to bring along objects and recyclable materials that can be implemented in the creation of the puppets.
Workshop Focus
This workshop explores the art of puppet design and construction using recycled and secondhand materials. Participants will learn to transform discarded objects—from bottle caps and old fabrics to broken toys and found trinkets—into unique, expressive puppets. Drawing inspiration from artists who saw beauty and potential in everyday, often overlooked items, we will embrace a creative process that re-imagines what others might consider trash. This hands-on experience will demonstrate how ordinary materials hold an inherent, poetic potential, guiding participants to give new life to these objects. By the end of the workshop, attendees will not only have created their own puppets but will also be encouraged to reconsider their relationship with the ordinary world, seeing it through a renewed lens of perception and imagination.
Learning Outcomes
Participants will be introduced to mechanical and anatomical considerations for the design of anthropomorphic objects.
Participants will explore several concepts inherent to puppet manipulation, such us the potential of involuntary movement, direct and indirect manipulation.
Workshop Structure
This workshop is designed as an introduction to the performance you will experience afterwards, and it is part of our company's ongoing exploration of alternative forms of audience engagement. We believe that theatre is a space for genuine human connection, a place to share experiences and collectively reflect on our world.
The workshop is divided into two parts:
Part 1: A puppet from the piece as an example (1 hour )
During the first part of the workshop the participants will be guided in the construction of a puppet inspired by the puppets used during the performance “The Greenhouse”. They will explore different possible recycled materials used for this purpose, and how the materials will have an effect on the movement capabilities of the objects. All required materials will be provided by the company in collaboration with the organising venue. Since the goal of the workshop is to share the importance of sustainable practices the ideal scenario would be to recycle material already used and available during the event, such us plastic bottles, old news papers, old posters, etc.
Part 2: Working with the poetic universe of the participants (1 hour)
For this second part of the workshop the participants will be lead in the creation of a new puppet utilising the materials they have brought from home.
Workshop Requirements:
Location: The company suggests that the best location for the realisation of the workshops is the stage where the piece is performed.
Materials: The participants should be encouraged to bring recyclable materials that they can find in their households as well as objects that can be modified and transform into puppets. The organisation of the event will be requested to provide a set of simple tools for the construction of the puppets (scissors, tape, utility knives). These basic tools can also be provided by the company if previously agreed.
Participants: It is suggested to establish a maximum number of participants to no more than 15 people.
Technical requirements: 3 stage platforms of 2 metres by 1 metre. Access to the show lights (when possible) Access to the sound system by the stage.
