This workshop is designed for anyone interested in exploring the art of puppet manipulation, from complete beginners to those with some experience. All materials (repurposed and found objects) will be provided.

Workshop Focus

This practical workshop invites participants to discover the transformative power of puppetry, exploring how discarded objects can be imbued with life and meaning. We will delve into the fundamental principles of puppet manipulation - Breath, Weight, and Focus - to create the illusion of sentience and explore how this act of animation can move us, connecting us to something beyond ourselves. This process of giving new life to discarded materials reflects our belief that even the most ordinary objects hold poetic potential, inviting us to see the world with fresh eyes.

Learning Outcomes

  • Participants will be introduced to the fundamental principles that create the illusion of life and sentience in a puppet, fostering a deeper connection with the material world.

  • Participants will explore how transforming discarded objects into objects of aesthetic value can create powerful emotional experiences.

Workshop Structure

This workshop is designed as an introduction to the performance you will experience afterwards, and it is part of our company's ongoing exploration of alternative forms of audience engagement. We believe that theatre is a space for genuine human connection, a place to share experiences and collectively reflect on our world.

The workshop is divided into three parts:

Part 1: Foundational Principles (45 minutes)

We will explore the three core principles of puppet manipulation through practical exercises:

  • Breath: Learn how subtle movements can simulate breathing, giving your puppets a palpable presence and evoking emotion. We will focus on exercises involving chest, shoulder, and head movements.

  • Weight: Discover how manipulating a puppet’s centre of gravity creates realistic and expressive movement, giving them a physical presence in the space. We will practice exercises exploring balance, momentum, and weight transfer.

  • Focus: Master the art of directing a puppet’s attention to engage the audience and tell a story, creating a shared experience. We will work on exercises that develop eye contact, head turns, and body language.

Part 2: Collaborative Scene Work (45 minutes)

Participants will be divided into small groups and guided in the creation of short theatrical scenes. This section will introduce further manipulation principles:

  • Communicating and Sharing a Common Goal and Poetic Universe: Learn how to collaborate effectively with other manipulators to create a cohesive and engaging performance, fostering a sense of shared creation.

  • Switching the Contact or Manipulation Points Between Manipulators: Explore techniques for seamlessly transferring control of the puppet between performers, creating a fluid and dynamic performance.

  • The Body of the Manipulator as a Landscape for the Puppet to Inhabit: Discover how to use your own body as a platform and environment for the puppet, enhancing its presence and movement and creating a more intimate connection between puppet and manipulator.

Part 3: Improvisation and Application (30 minutes)

Teams will participate in improvisation exercises, applying all the principles learned throughout the workshop. This will provide an opportunity to explore creative expression and solidify their understanding of puppet manipulation techniques, further blurring the lines between performer and audience.
